Taxpayer Advocates Condemn LA County Vote to Spend Public Funds on Rent Relief for Illegal Immigrants
Los Angeles, CA — A taxpayer accountability group today sharply criticized the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for voting to use local tax dollars to provide rent assistance to undocumented migrants, calling the move “an insult to working families and a misuse of scarce county resources.”
“Los Angeles County is already facing a record homelessness crisis — from Pacific Palisades to Altadena — yet the Board is prioritizing benefits for individuals who are not in the country legally,” said [Spokesperson Name], [Title of Organization]. “Every dollar spent on rent subsidies for illegal immigrants is a dollar taken away from helping law-abiding residents who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads.”
Under the emergency declaration approved this week, the County could direct rent relief funds and other housing aid toward undocumented individuals affected by federal immigration enforcement actions.
Opponents argue that such spending will encourage more illegal immigration, further strain county housing programs, and place an unfair burden on taxpayers who already face the nation’s highest cost of living.
“Instead of rewarding illegal entry, LA County should focus on helping local citizens, veterans, and families already living on the streets,” said [Spokesperson Name]. “There are humane and legal ways for individuals to return to their country of origin — many programs even provide transportation assistance — but using taxpayer money to fund rent for those who broke immigration law sends exactly the wrong message.”
The group also questioned the legality of the measure, noting that federal law assigns immigration matters to the U.S. government, not local jurisdictions. “When the County takes on federal responsibilities with local money, it not only undermines the law but risks lawsuits and waste,” the statement added.
“Angelenos deserve accountability, not open-ended spending programs that favor politics over fairness.”
