The Los Angeles County Taxpayers Association (LATax) has taken the lead in organizing a statewide coalition urging the Senate Education Committee to reject Assembly Bill 681. The bill—scheduled for hearing tomorrow—would dramatically expand graduate-level loan access through the California DREAM Loan Program for individuals residing in the country illegally.
At a time when California is staring down a $22 billion budget deficit—with projected shortfalls totaling $73 billion over the next three years—this proposal is fiscally reckless. Even Governor Newsom has frozen new Medi-Cal enrollment for undocumented immigrants due to a $6 billion overrun in health spending. AB 681 goes in the opposite direction.
The coalition—made up of taxpayer associations from San Diego, the Central Valley, Placer County, Solano County, and Sutter-Yuba—joins LATax in calling on legislators to rein in spending, not expand it. Working Californians already face soaring prices, crushing taxes, and tough choices. They expect Sacramento to do the same.
We urge members of the Senate Education Committee to reject AB 681 and act in the interest of California taxpayers.
